A Community of Fellowship
Posted by BaBa under: Daily Life; Friends and Family .
Today was our third Sunday at a new church. We attended the early service and were inspired by the music. We then met a group of friends for prayer. Many of these friends are facing difficult times in the coming months. We met in a small room and prayed for each other’s needs for the coming days and for the near future. We expressed the desires of our hearts to each other and lifted these up for God to hear. It was a moving experience. I will not name those present or discuss their concerns, but will continue to pray for them as each faces their upcoming challenges.
A box of tissues was needed in the end, but it was really quite moving and we then spent a few minutes after prayer just talking. We then had an information luncheon to learn more about the church and their core beliefs. Sheridan stayed in the nursery for this, but three different volunteers checked on him frequently to see how he was doing. Unlike our previous church where we could not leave him at the nursery. He had an intense dislike for the lady (who knew it all) that ran the nursery.
The fact that she worked in childcare for a number of years did not give her the right to tell us that we should let him cry it out. She has no idea about separation anxiety with adoptive children and how to deal with this. Why is it that some see parents who have a child whose race is different and assume that we are in need of advice since we are obvious not “real” parents. This attitude makes me angry.
Suffice to say that the nursery was a bad experience for Sheridan at our former church. Even now when we go by the church as we travel, he sees the building and says no go to nursery. It is not the only reason we decided to look at another church. It is just one of several. As I had written earlier, we had felt more and more disconnected from the church. This disconnect along with the fact that many in our adoption group attend here have led us to make this change. We want to find community and enjoy worshiping with friends while enjoying excellent contemporary spiritual music. However, we are still Episcopalians, but as of now we are attending church at a non-denominational church and enjoying the change. I still miss weekly communion and the change is even harder on MaMa as she is a cradle Episcopalian. However, we have decided to do what is best for us, for Sheridan and to grow in faith with our friends. Also Dan plays a mean guitar.
One Comment so far...
