Mummies, Noodles, Mammals, Oh My

Posted by BaBa under: Daily Life .

Our spring break this year featured trips into Atlanta to partake of the local attractions. I had wanted to go see the Michael Carlos Museum at Emory University and today was the day to go. On Tuesday we had made the trip to Fernbank Museum of Natural History and then onto the Zoo.

The Zoo is a wonderful place to take Sheridan as he loves the animals and we have a year long membership. Today, we would go to the Museum followed by lunch and then end up at the Zoo. We set off after we puttered around the house enjoying a leisurely morning. Such are the things that Spring Breaks are supposed to be made for.

We loaded up the consignment sale McLaren stroller and a few snacks and we were off. It is a little bit of a ride to Emory, but we were soon there. Then we were in search of parking spot. We made into the visitor’s deck, but on the first pass there were no spaces. We did luck into one after retreating in reverse from the second level. A short walk brought us to the museum.

We had told Sheridan that we were going to see Mummies. It took a little clarifying for him to distinguish Mummies and Mommies. How funny. We arrived to be greeted by an awful example of poor English on a sign in the museum. Restooms. Restooms? Well I guest tombs are for rest though it was not spelled as tombs by tooms. Someone needed to proofread.

We looked at the Greek, Roman and other ancient mid-east collections. We also looked at the collections for the ancient peoples of the Americas. Then we came to the Egyptian collection. It is a little bit of a let down for us not because it is a poor collection. When you have been to the source and visited the Valley of the Kings, Giza, Abul Simbel and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, you have seen much of the treasures of the Egypt. Although a great many other treasures are located around the world in many museums including the vast collection of the British Museum in London and the Louvre in Paris. If you want to see the world and can only go one place — visit the British Museum (they acquired vast quantities of the world’s wonders during the time when the sun never set on the British Empire).

However, Sheridan was quite wowed by the Mummies. He said several times — another one! This means simply that he wants to see more. They had several Mummies and coffins along with a really nice set of Canopic jars along with jewelry, statues and other items. The displays were well done and it is a nicely displayed. The museum is really quite a poorly kept secret in Atlanta. Too few visit. The museum has secured an exhibition this year of King Tut artifacts. This will be quite an event.

There was special display from Egypt on the Nubian period of Egyptian History. No photos here, but it was quite interesting. We finished and then went downstairs to the museum store where Sheridan got a scarab and a necklace with his Chinese Zodiac symbol (rooster).

A short walk from the museum brought us to the place that MaMa spotted as we arrived – a noodle house. Sheridan and MaMa had soup and noodles for lunch. It is spooky how your children really get to know you. I left them at the noodle house to go in search of lunch (a sub). Sheridan looked up at MaMa while I was gone and said “BaBa get hamburger.” Does my son know me or what? Yes!!!!!

We left lunch and journeyed to the Zoo. I got some more good Panda pictures as the BaBa panda was munching ferociously on fresh Bamboo. MaMa just woke up from a nap, but was also photogenic.    We then went to see the Meerkats and the Otters. These are two of his favorites. We saw the tigers as one were pacing near the glass. We also ventured over to see the Lions and were rewarded as one of them was active. He had never seen the Lions. Dad called and wanted to meet for dinner.

So we left and encountered no traffic on the way home and easily made it to Ted’s for dinner. It was nice to end the day with dinner with Mom and Dad.
