Pink Pig with Playgroup — Recollections of Rich’s

MaMa will have to write more about this trip with the playgroup to Lenox Square to ride Rich’s Pink Pig last Thursday. Yes, I know that it is now called Macy’s Pink Pig since there is no more Rich’s, but as you get older you still refer to things by the proper name. MaMa and I can remember riding the Pink Pig at the wonderful Rich’s department store downtown in Atlanta.
Rich’s downtown was my FAVORITE store. There are so many memories to this old fashioned store. It was a store that inspired loyalty. You could shop all over town for an item and then bring in the ad and they would match the price.

Service was their hallmark and you could find everything there under one roof in the store that spanned two buildings with a breezeway across the street.
Rich’s had restaurants from the formal Magnolia Room to cafes on the breezeway. It also had a bakery that you would create wonderful tasty treats such as Chocolate bar cakes, butter ring cookies and my favorite a shortbread type cookie with a cream center topping. I do miss the delicacies and the slower pace of life that this dear department store represented.
When I first rode the Pink Pig, it circled high above the toy department and then in later years it moved to the rooftop monorail that circled the great tree with ornaments the size of beech balls. While I am reminiscing, there also was a Secret Shoppe where the kids would go with helpers into a special large room with their Christmas list and an envelope of money pinned to them to shop for their parents or family.
Ah yes, those were the days and I am indeed dating myself with such wistful memories.
Well Sheridan got to ride the Pink Pig at Lenox today and see the great tree high up on the roof top now at Lenox instead of Downtown. I wonder in years to come if he will have the same type of wistful memories. I can only wonder and hope that MaMa and I can create these magical memories for him.
