Trip Day 1 — Reflections on Seattle Past
Posted by BaBa under: Travel .
Flying to Seattle, I had memories of our only other trip to this city. Going to Seattle marked out first cruise and really our first independent trip in many years. We had previously traveled with the camper, but this time we had to pack luggage, work with public transport and make our own arrangements.
MaMa had just gotten clearance to travel and this was our first trip since her illness. We had learned a lot of things since she was ill and were ready to cope with the accommodations we would have to make for not only traveling, but in living.
One thing that I remember is how over packed we were. We have learned on subsequent trips to pack light. This time, we had a rolling REI backpack for each of us and for the two of us we had our trusty travel Jansport blue backpacks. We picked these up on clearance at Office Depot in 2003 and they are our hand luggage.
Mine carries all of the electronic gear. I take the camera gear out of the bag and it folds flat into our regular luggage. The modular compartments fit in the bottom of the backpack and then I add all the cords, computer and travel docs. MaMa’s backpack is the called the “dity bag” and resembles a portable medicine chest and all of the items (books – now Kindle and items for day trips.
The trip was wonderful. We enjoyed it. We found that we could get around easily, but we needed to pack much more efficiently. We learned to plan each aspect of a trip and to check and double check all of the transportation logistics. We have become adapt at our two bag per person rule and reading schedules and maps for public transport.
I mentioned that this was our first cruise and ironically while in Seattle we visited the Titanic exhibit. This was fascinating, but in hind sight might not have been the best choice to take MaMa to see before taking ferries and boarding a big ship in Vancouver.
We look forward to showing Magoo the harbor, the aquarium and Pike’s market and having some hot doughnuts in the Market.
