No More Sleeps or Delays – Airport Travels

Posted by BaBa under: Daily Life; Friends and Family; Travel .

Well I got up early this morning before 4:30am. I got showered, shaved, and did the last minute email check along with deleting my active Craig List postings. Dad came by just as I was finishing my computer work and we ventured to Waffle House for breakfast. We finished with breakfast and were off to the airport. We had a nice chat this morning on the way which I enjoyed. We arrived in plenty of time and I went straight to security. No problems going through and made my way to the gate to sit and wait. I sat and waited and then came the call – this flight is oversold. I volunteered to give up my seat and so after waiting awhile, I was bumped. I got a free ticket (roundtrip to anywhere they fly), $25 discount on the next paid flight and $10 meal credit.

I made my way to the next gate after calling MaMa with the less than thrilling news that I was going to be another later flight. After getting over the shock, was OK. By the time we talked again, she had provided breakfast for Magoo and he was better. He then got the idea that I was coming in on Sunday. No, I will be there today only later than I had expected.

I am sitting here waiting for the second flight and again came the announcement that the flight is overbooked (I already knew this from this morning). Once again I am number in queue to get bumped. If I get bumped, I will again get the same deal as this morning. The ticket I earned this morning along with our points should help us be able to travel for Spring Break.

I have a thought of us flying to San Francisco for spring break and then driving up to Portland and on to Seattle and then back home. This would make a splendid trip for us and quite reasonable with free air. Only have to rent a car and the hotels which I will use my LaQuinta points to offset. Magoo would have a great time in San Francisco as it such a great city to visit. I have never been to Oregon and always wanted to go to Portland. Seattle is also a neat place to visit.

Well I am still here in the airport and have now earned two free roundtrip tickets on Airtran along with two $25 discounts on a future ticket. It is interesting spending the day in airport as it like a self-sufficient city unto itself. I am not volunteering to give up my seat a third time if they ask for volunteers. It is time to get back to my loved ones. However in compensation for spending a few short hours in the airport, I will be able to fly all of us on a great vacation that we probably would not have taken this year. So it is a great and unexpected Christmas gift.

On the second flight, they took two seats and compensated me and one other lady flying from New York. She did not know about the voucher care kit. I asked the gate agent and she said that she did not have any and we would have to go to customer service. The line there was incredibly long, but we had time and so stood and waited. And we waited. Finally we got to the front and there was no problem getting her the voucher, but mine tied up in the computer. I waited some more and it got worked out. With voucher in hand, I went to Charley’s grilled subs and had lunch. This morning I got Magoo, MaMa and I cookies from the bread company store along with 2 chocolate chip muffins.
