Adoption Option – December 2008

Posted by BaBa under: Adoption Option .

We had our 3rd meeting of the new group Adoption Option. Our group came together to celebrate two new children home from China and this special time of year. We have one family now in China who are on their way to their new daughter Faith. They were in our thoughts on this night of fellowship and friendship.

We had a nice home cooked meal by our chef Michael. We enjoyed this wonderful feast along with the items others brought to complete the meal. The kids enjoyed playing and seeing each other under the watchful eyes of Miss. Kristen who watched over their play.

After dinner, we explored the topic of traditions and how to integrate some of Chinese culture into your family. Many stories were shared by those who have children and those who are waiting on their children. I posed the idea that we look at this from a different perspective. Instead of thinking about what you can do to help your child experience the culture of their birth county, let’s think about how we establish family traditions.

In establishing family traditions we are building memories for our child that will last all of our lifetimes. Adding in traditions and culture from your child’s birth country is a large portion of this, but you also have to add in those items from your culture to create your family traditions. This approach will help build those memories that are priceless and uniquely belong to your family. This process requires thoughtful planning and awareness of what you value and how to make these precious memories.

My words of advice is don’t leave your memories and your child’s memories to chance. Reflect with your spouse on what are your treasured memoreis from childhood. Consciously incorporate these events into your celebrations of holidays and special days throught out the year. Be proactive in building your family’s memories.

I got the photos from Amy’s site since she and Michael shot them.
