Terra Cotta Warriors

Posted by BaBa under: Daily Life .

Tonight we took Mr. Magoo to see the Terra Cotta Warrior exhibit that opened in town. It was at the High Museum and I had tickets to this exhibit. The night was educator night and we went to enjoy the exhibit. MaMa had gotten Sheridan a Terra Cotta Warrior in cased in a clay block. He had to dig it out and they did this earlier in preparation for our trip to see the real warriors. We dropped off the truck at the dealer for some recall work and then headed downtown.

We arrived just in time for our time slot on the tickets. We even found a spot on the street to park right in front avoiding the $10 to $15 parking charges. We walked in and got our printed guides. We headed upstairs where we obtained the audio guides and began the tour. It is a really nice exhibit. It was very informative and well planned out.

It is hard to compare the exhibit to the museum in China. There is no real comparison. The museum in China is vast and you truly see the awe in the size of the army as it stands guard over Emperor Qin’s unopened tomb. There is no real way to re-create this in a traveling exhibit. In Xian, you are overwhelmed with the size and sheer numbers in the Emperor’s Army. You see the original spot where the farmer discovered the first head while digging a well. In fact, you can see the farmer who discovered this treasure in the 1970’s and buy a book that he signed.

So there is no real comparison. However, most people will not travel to Xian in China to see these treasures. The exhibit does a great job of bringing the soldiers to a much larger audience around the world. You are able to get really close to the soldiers on display. This is something not possible in China. You also see several things that you do not see in China including Terra Cotta Juggler and brass animals and Terra Cotta Musicians. It is well worth the trip to see these archeological treasures. It is not something to miss if it is in a location that is near you.

We finished the evening with dinner at the Varsity.
