Birthday Party & Family Thanksgiving
Posted by BaBa under: Daily Life; Friends and Family .
We went to a birthday party this Saturday. It was at one of the jump and giggle play places. I dropped both of them off and then went on a trip back to the camera store. I was getting a remote trigger for the camera. Now that Magoo is home, I want to have photos of all three of us instead of just pictures of either of us as we travel. I am always behind the camera and thus have great memories, but looking over the photos I am often not in many. I think that it is important for Sheridan one day to have photos of his “team” as he sometimes call us or his family as he often says. Our family, it has a nice ring to it.
The drive there seemed long, but the return trip back home seemed much shorter. I got to talk to Greg and Christy and it is always good to chat with them. MaMa got a chance to go get some hot tea with some of the other MaMas while the kids played. This was a nice chance for her to have some adult time.
We left the most excellent birthday party and headed to Nana and YeYe’s house. Our family is dyslexic when it comes to calendars and holidays or special occasions. We hardly ever celebrate these days on the actual day. Mom just picks a day and then we have Alternate Christmas or Monthly Birthdays or Alternate (Insert Holiday Name Here).
This Saturday November 15th was one of these Alternate Holidays. We were celebrating Thanksgiving 12 days early, my birthday 9 days early, MaMa’s birthday 81 days late and Bill’s birthday. This year it is because we are out of town on a cruise as our my brother, sister-in-law, children and my parents. They are on a Carnival Ship and we are on a brand new Princess Ship. We are on essentially the same trip as to stops. We have one more stop, but their ship visits Cancun first while ours visits Ocho Rios first. Sometime this week the ships will pass going opposite directions on the ocean.
The tradition of alternate holidays is an interesting quirk in our family that grew out of my parent’s divorce. Mom (as I call my step-mom) and Dad held the holidays on alternative dates so that my brother and I could spend the actual holiday with Mother. My step-mom earned the title of Mom by always being there and so this is why I call her Mom. This continues even though I am no longer on Mother’s guest list and have not been for many years.
Every time we have a family get together, there is another round of war. I don’t mean family squabbling, but war. War is what we call it when all of the boys shoot each other and play like well boys. I am really proud of Freddie who is our oldest grandchild. He continues to play war with the little guys even though he is now in high school. Where has the time gone? I still remember driving him around Miami years ago when he was Sheridan’s age.
I got a few photos this time of War. As you can see Freddie is often carrying one or two attackers with him. Kelsea, our granddaughter, plays with our niece Carol and they both occasionally join the War. Their playing on their own is increasing in frequency as they get older. Mom and Dad have 2 great grandchildren and 7 grandchildren. This is a little misleading as the great grandchildren are the oldest of the under 18 group.
We had a good time as always and really appreciate that Mom has these Alternate Holidays and Monthly Birthdays. In this way we are able to keep family together and enjoy each other’s company on a regular basis. Here are some photos from our busy Saturday.
