I want to take Pictures

Posted by BaBa under: Photography .

What better words could BaBa hear from his young son than “I want to take pictures” or more simply “smile” as he holds up a pretend camera. BaBa’s passionate hobby is photography. We though and though of what to get Sheridan for Gotcha Day. He has plenty of toys and is not toy crazy like some kids. He really likes to spend time with us and is developing an interest in our activities. He pretends to take pictures and those who read the blog can see always hams it up when we take his picture.

The choice seemed natural. So, yesterday MaMa went and got two cameras for us to look at it together when he was in bed. We looked at the Fisher Price Kid Tough Digital Camera about $50 and the Little Tykes “My Real Digital Camera” about $30. The Little Tykes was ruled out immediately. No information as to megapixels and with the number of photos that it is said to store (1000) and the 64mb (nowhere shown on the box), the quality must be dreadful. I am not trying to get him a DSLR now, but when he takes a photo, I wish to be able to print them and let him display them in his room.

The Fisher Price Kid Tough stores 60 pictures at 1.2 megapixel. Think about the quality of the first camera phones. Not really bad and the online reviews were mixed, but genuinely positive. He is a very intelligent little guy and really very responsible, so I thought we could do better still. I went only line and looked at ecost.com and found a couple of Kodak digital cameras (re-manufactured) in about the $60 range. This would do nicely. I still wanted him to have this today instead of waiting. So, I looked around and found I still had an email from Staples for $25 off a $75 purchase. Great. This would do nicely. The Kodak cameras I was looking out were about $99. Not so good. I continued to look around and found Walmart carried them at $74 and $84. Good. Go to Staples, get a price match and then use the coupon. I also might luck into a close-out as well that would do the trick.

Yes, I did find and HP Photosmart M737 with Pentax lens 3x zoom and 8 megapixel including case on clearance. With my coupon and a couple of other small purchases, we were done. I have nothing against the Fisher Price camera, but I thought we could do better for him. The winner is in the last picture below. We told him that he could use it to take photos of us and his friends, but it must stay on the lanyard around his neck. I am going to wake him in a minute for his photo lesson.

Sheridan was so excited and cannot wait to try it out at dinner tonight.

We are going to a Japanese Steakhouse to celebrate Gotcha Day.

Here are photos of the cameras we looked at it and the one we got him.
